The sport of golf has been around for almost 500 years.  It dates its origins back to Scotland where it was banned by King James II for interfering with archery practice!

The early years were marked by a lack of organization, which persisted until 1744 when a group from Edinburgh formed the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers.  This was followed in a few years by the Society of St. Andrews Golfers which eventually became the Royal and Ancient Golf club of St. Andrews.

The earliest clubs were hewn from wooden species such as beech, apple or dogwood and fitted with a shaft of hazel or ash to provide a moderate amount of “spring.” Later, materials such as bone or horn were placed in the club face to provide a harder surface. Blacksmiths later began tinkering with iron clubs, forging faces with and without grooves for shorter shots.

The earliest balls were composed of hand-stitched leather pieces stuffed with feathers.  This was later replaced by the gutta-percha ball, followed by the Haskell ball.  Today’s modern balls are covered in Balata or Surlyn with a composite core that has replaced the wound type of days past.
